The Film & TV Academy is a weekend filmmaking & acting Academy for ages 8 – 18.

Students at FTA are split into the following classes based on their age:

Blue Group: Ages 8 – 12
Red Group: Ages 13 – 18

Our ethos is ‘learn by doing’. At our Academy, students create professional short films, each project spanning multiple weeks. Projects are guided by teachers with filmmaking expertise and professional acting experience.

Over the course of the year, FTA students have the oppotunity to try out multiple roles, both onscreen and off.

All films are screened at our annual Odeon cinema screening & awards ceremony – every summer.

Acting

Students receive comprehensive training designed to hone their craft and prepare them for the competitive world of film and television.

Classes focus on character development, script analysis, improvisation, and on-camera performance, providing a robust foundation in both the art and technicalities of acting.

Students gain practical experience through hands-on projects, working on real film sets, and collaborating with peers, which helps them to understand the collaborative nature of filmmaking.

Cinematography

The study of cinematography immerses students in the art and science of capturing compelling visuals for film and television.

The curriculum covers essential principles such as lighting, camera operation, shot composition, and movement, enabling students to craft visually stunning and emotionally engaging scenes.

Hands-on training with state-of-the-art equipment allows students to gain practical experience and technical proficiency, mirroring the demands of professional film sets.

Directing

The Film & TV Academy offers aspiring directors a comprehensive education in the art and craft of filmmaking.

We cover essential directing skills, including script analysis, storyboarding, casting, shot composition, and guiding actors to deliver powerful performances.

Hands-on projects allow students to direct their own films, working collaboratively with peers in acting, cinematography, and production roles to gain practical experience and a holistic understanding of the filmmaking process.

Team work

At the Film & TV Academy, teamwork is a fundamental pillar of the learning experience, reflecting the collaborative nature of the film and television industry.

Students engage in numerous group projects that require close cooperation with their peers across various disciplines, including acting, directing, cinematography, and scriptwriting.

This collaborative environment helps students develop essential communication and interpersonal skills, fostering mutual respect and understanding among team members.

Confidence

Building confidence is a core objective integrated into every aspect of the curriculum. Students are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and explore their creative potential in a supportive and nurturing environment.

By the end of their training, students emerge as self-assured individuals, ready to tackle the challenges of the film and television industry with poise and confidence.

Experience

At the Film & TV Academy, gaining hands-on experience is a central component of the educational journey, ensuring that students acquire practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge.

From the very beginning, students are immersed in real-world projects that mirror the professional environment of the film and television industry.

Whether they are acting in front of the camera, directing scenes, operating film equipment, or crafting scripts, students engage in a variety of roles that provide a comprehensive understanding of the filmmaking process.

This experiential learning approach allows students to apply techniques learned in the classroom to actual productions, fostering a deeper comprehension of their craft.
