The Film & TV Academy is a weekend filmmaking & acting Academy for ages 8 – 18.

Our sessions are held every weekend, and classes meet to create ongoing film & TV projects for an Odeon cinema release.

Projects are made using professional film equipment, and mentored by staff with expertise in filmmaking & screen acting. This provides students with hands-on experience, while being part of a dynamic, creative team.

Our Academy runs two seperate classes:

Blue Group: Ages 8 – 12
Red Group: Ages 13 – 18

Over the course of the year, classes create a selection of film & TV projects, that then get screened at Odeon – during our Annual FTA Screening & Awards Ceremony.

FTA is proud to be awarded “Creative Business Of The Year 2024” by the Buckinghamshire Business Awards.

Acting for screen

Our approach at FTA is ‘learn by doing’.

Students receive hands-on practical training in screen acting. When cast in FTA film projects, students are treated like professional actors, and are given this experience onset. This is an opportunity to understand the job of an actor on a film set. training our students to be comfortable acting with plenty of film equipment pointed at them.

At FTA, we pride ourselves on creating a supportive and relaxed atmosphere on set, to help our students bring their best performances to the screen.

Each project at FTA takes several weeks to devise, film and complete. Students can choose whether they want to act or not, and are never forced into acting if they prefer to stay on crew. It’s entirely up to the students preference, and they can change it up every project.

Filmmaking

Each film project at FTA lasts several weeks. Students pitch ideas, write the screenplay, plan, cast, & then shoot the film. The whole process is mentored by staff with industry experience and filmmaking expertise.

For each project, students take on specific roles and responsabilities within the project, either as cast or crew, or both. Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to explore every aspect of the filmmaking process, from directing and camera work to lighting, sound, and special effects. They work alongside their peers to bring a shared vision to life, learning the technical and creative skills needed to produce professional-level film projects.

Projects at FTA are designed to immerse students in the entire filmmaking process, from concept to final cut. We aim to foster a collaborative, supportive environment where students can discover their filmmaking passions while working on projects they’re proud of.

Experience

At the Film & TV Academy, gaining hands-on experience is a central component of the educational journey, ensuring that students acquire practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge.

From the very beginning, students are immersed in projects that mirror the professional environment of the film and television industry.

Whether they are acting in front of the camera, directing scenes, operating film equipment, or crafting scripts, students engage in a variety of roles that provide a comprehensive understanding of the filmmaking process.

This experiential learning approach allows students to apply techniques learned in the classroom to actual productions, fostering a deeper comprehension of their craft.

Team work

At the Film & TV Academy, teamwork is a fundamental pillar of the learning experience, reflecting the collaborative nature of the film and television industry.

Students engage in numerous group projects that require close cooperation with their peers across various disciplines, including acting, directing, cinematography, and scriptwriting.

This collaborative environment helps students develop essential communication and interpersonal skills, fostering mutual respect and understanding among team members.
